Duntulm Castle. Near the tip of the Trotternish Peninsula is the ruined MacDonald fortress of Duntulm Castle, which was abandoned in 1739, reputedly because it was haunted. From the red telephone box 800m east of the castle, a faint path leads north for 1.5 miles to Rubha Hunish coastguard lookout, now restored as a tiny but cosy bothy.

The return route along the shore offers an alternative view of Duntulm Castle. Rubha Hunish walk starts at Shulista which is 24miles from Portree. There is space for about 8 cars in the carpark. There is an old style red phone box at the Shulista road end. The walk is loop totalling 6.2km and takes an average of 2hrs to complete.

The ghost of the nursemaid, killed in retribution, is still said to wander the ruins. She is apparently kept company by the ghost of Hugh MacDonald, who plotted against the rightful clan chief in the 1600s, and who was starved to death in the dungeon at Duntulm. Duntulm Castle sits atop the cliffs at the far north end of the Isle of Skye. On a clear day there are stunning views across The Minch to the Western Isles. If you follow the A855 from either Uig or Staffin and follow the loop round the north end of Skye you can't miss it. It is approximately 8 miles from both Staffin and Uig.

Duntulm castle is a ruin on the northern tip of the aisle of Skye. The ruins are accessed by a muddy path between farmers fields but you cannot access the castle itself which is fenced off due to risk of collapse. The scenery is bleak but impressive and the ruin is picturesque with sheep climbing all over.
